Research Proposal

A Different Kind of Romance
Why did television show creators suddenly decided to start making shows on television that portrayed the normalization that all working married couples are not always happy and wealthy? The television show, The Honeymooners, was not the first, but it was one of the shows on television to show a married working couples in a different way before a lot of other shows also did the same. Ralph and Alice were a married couple with no children and they lived in an old run-down apartment that was only something that they could afford. The husband, Ralph, would go to work every day while his wife, Alice, did not work and she would stay at home and take care and clean their apartment. Being fed up with not having a lot of money, the husband would always participate in a lot of get rich fast schemes with his best friend but they would always fail horribly. He would then get upset and take his anger out on everyone around him, especially his wife. Throughout the show after failing one of his schemes, the husband, Ralph, would make threats of hitting his wife, Alice, after she would explain that everything that went wrong with the plans was his fault. But she would never be phased by his threats or take any of them serious because of how accustomed she have become to his behavior. The importance of my research on the topic of my paper is to inform how the show, The Honeymooners, was different from any other show that was about any working class married couple. They showed the negative between the couple instead of the couple against everyone else. The way I am going to structure my paper to address my research, I am going to first start talking about the background of the show, The Honeymooners, and then I would explain how viewers felt about the show and what types of reviews and backlash the creator was receiving for continuing the show because the show received so many bad reviews. I then would go on to explain how this show was different from any of the other shows on married couples and families. My argument is that the creator was in no wrong for creating and continuing the show because it showed reality and not a fairy-tale of a happily married family with no problems. Challenges that I think that I may encounter in researching this paper would have to be finding good evidence that showed that people did have support of the show from reviews that were left to support my argument that the show was not in any way a bad representation of issues between families. Also, that the show was not created to show the acceptance of domestic violence but to show how the couple was comfortable enough with each other to be able to express how they are feeling with one another. My purpose of using the show, The Honeymooners, is because it was one of the first television shows that included more than one genre in the show.
Thesis: The Honeymooners was a part of the revolution of television shows showing different plots in a family and romance comedy.
